Abaddon’s Gate – #3 of The Expanse

Abaddon's gate review

I enjoyed watching The Expanse, which now continues on Amazon Prime.  It was because of that show that I decided to subscribe to Prime and kept it on because there are several good shows to watch.  Especially with the Covid-19 Pandemic, you are stuck in the house longer than you ever imagined – whether you’re working or have been laid off.

In any case, I decided to read the series since many are stating that the books are just as good. Written by two authors – the joint pen name of authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck. When I read each book, I think back to the similarities and their are only minor differences from the books and the show.  In the third book, Abaddon’s Gate, a ring has formed that sends many curious factions to investigate – Belters, Martians and Earthers, as well as the religious factions.  James Holden is at the forefront and with the help of the manifestation of Miller, he tries to talk everyone down from killing themselves so they can save the universe.

The alien lifeform that created the ring feels threatened and if the other ships don’t power down, they seem like a threat.  Well, like anything else that is threatened, it’s going to lash out.  In this case, it means the destruction of everything – inside and outside of the ring.  Ashford doesn’t believe that and he was willing to take the chance of destroying the ring before it had a chance to destroy them all.

To me, the biggest difference in the books from the series is the inclusion of Bobbie Draper.  When Holden touches the core, “his consciousness ascends and he learns about the creators, who were a galaxy-spanning hive consciousness.  He realizes the creators were sending fire through the Rings and blowing up entire star systems to try and quarantine something from coming through. The station has been waiting two billion years for the all-clear to re-open the wormhole network. Miller says the station is in “war mode.”” When the Martians show up in the series, Bobbie is there with them to take Holden away, when Martians show up to try to take down the broadcast on the Behemoth, Bobbie is there as one of the gunners.  I like Bobbie in the books and I’m glad they wrote her character in more of the episodes in the series.

For the love of science fiction and reading, The Expanse series is a must read as it is creative, exciting, intelligent plot, diverse characters and factions to explore and filled with mystery, drama and in-depth character development.

LUCIFER

Published December 20, 2015 by Jenn Andrew

Issue #1; Cold Heaven Part one: Prodigal Sons

This is one of the new comics that came out and the name caught  my interest.  It’s written for mature readers. The title is straight forward and to the point so you know exactly what it’s about. Who doesn’t know about the devil and the story of good and evil? There are so many different spins as to how this story is going to turn out so I was willing to give it a try. The cover is a little simplistic but the graphics inside are better.

It starts off in Los Angeles 2015. It tells of his coming but not what you expect with fire and brimstone, but just weird things happening to some people. He’s there to make a home so what do you think happens next? Are we too hard on Lucifer? After all, the stories told of him are from religious types and from “God”.  There is also another character you may be familiar with and that’s Gabriel. Fallen angel who appears to be living his life on the dark side.  This is their story.

The dialogue is good with a few swear words but if you were practically living on the street, who cares what language you use. Your life would probably suck and this is the case for Gabriel. However, he is called upon to help and this may give him a chance to redeem himself.

The story is of two brothers who live different lives and what they must do to protect themselves from outside forces; one who follows the path of darkness and the other who follows redemption.

Once the dust has settled and everyone has practically forgotten about that day, I received many comics that lead the way to new issues that I will be reviewing in the coming weeks.

Hello and Welcome!

Friday, April 3 – Games Day at Comic Cafe

games day 3

games day 1

Games Day was a fun event.  Sorry for those who ended up not being able to attend.

There were a few people who were able to turn up and several games were played.

We have a group of 5 people playing Magic The Gathering and I was able to play my game Relic as well as Roll for It – a fun dice game.

For those who missed the event, Comic Cafe holds a Games Night every Monday starting at 6pm.  The earlier you get to The Comic Café at 6pm the better so we can pair you up to play a game.  If you get there too late, you’ll either end up waiting for a group to finish or joining late in a game.

The later you arrive, the harder it is to sit you down with 2 + players to play a game.  If you come with a friend, then it’s easier to grab a game that is available and get to playing.  To accommodate you, please RSVP so we know who will be able to attend.

games day 2

Thanks again for helping to make the day fun.

Hope to see you at another event!
